1.Guppies

Guppies are one of the famous fish for its wide variety of colors and patterns. It is a live-bearing fish and easy to maintain. Scientific name for the guppy is Poecilia reticulata. Lifespan of the guppies is 3 to 5 years. It is easy to tell male and female, males are more colorful and smaller fish, females can have a colorful tail fin, but the body is plain with a large white belly. And also female fish are larger than male.

2.Mollies

Mollies are another live-bearing fish. It is small and easy to maintain. Poecilia sphenops is the scientific name. There are different types of mollies based on colors, species and tail type. Mollies can grow around 3 to 4 inches long. Lifespan of the mollies is 3 to 5 years.

3.Platies

Similar to guppy and molly, platies are also live-bearers. Platies come with numerous exotic colors and are very social. Scientific name of platy fish is Xiphophorus maculatus. Adult size of platy fish is 1.5 to 2 inches and expected to live for 3 to 5 years.

4.Betta Fish

Betta fish also commonly known as fighter fish. It is the most popular choice in aquarium fish for the beginners. Bettas are very colorful, small and easy to care for. Betta fish are known for their highly territorial and aggressive nature with other fish, particularly males. Betta splendens is the scientific name and will live for 2 to 5 years.

5.Goldfish

Goldfish is one of the most famous aquarium fish and also beautiful. Scientific name of the goldfish is Carrassius auratus. Goldfish can grow about 12 to 14 inches with a lifespan of 10 to 15 years. These fishes need constant water change and filter maintenance.

6.Tetras

Tetras are small, thin and easy to maintain. Usually tetras are kept in groups of six or more. They feel safe in groups and also very social, and can keep with other fishes. One of the famous tetras is neon tetras. Paracheirodon innesi is the scientific name for the neon tetras.

7.Barbs

Barbs are one of the schooling fishes and need to keep a group of six or more. Different types of barb fish available in market. They can grow up to 4 inches or more with a lifespan of 5 to 7 years. Popular varieties of barbs are tiger barbs, Odessa barbs and cherry barbs.

8.Danios

Danios available in different colors and patterns. These are easy to maintain and schooling fish, so need to keep them in groups. One of the famous danios is zebra danios or zebrafish. Danio is the scientific name for this fish.

9.Angelfish

Angelfish is a member of the cichlid family. Angelfish come with a beautiful shape, distinctive fins, and lovely striped pattern. It can grow  6 inches in length and 8 inches tall. Scientific name of angelfish is Pterophyllum scalare. Angelfish can be territorial and aggressive, so it’s best to keep them in a tank without many fish.

10.Discus

Discus belongs to cichlid species, named for their circular body shape. It is better place them in large tank, because they can grow larger in size. Symphysodon is the scientific name. Discus can reach up to 9 inch in size
