Guppies (Poecilia reticulata): Best Live-Bearing Freshwater Aquarium Fish

Millionfish and rainbow fish are the other names for the guppies. Guppies originally appeared from northeast South America and nowadays can be found in all over the world. They're named for Robert John Lechmere Guppy who collected these fish on the island of Trinidad.

There are many color varieties of guppies. Based on the variety, some guppies posses short, rounded tails, some V-shaped and others can own an elongated tail half the breadth of  their body. Tails can be of single colors or pattern of different colors.

Male

Male Guppies usually have very slender body. Males can grow up to size of 1 inch. Male fish is the attractive, because of its color, patterns and tails.

Breeding

It is advised to keep one male and two female fishes in the tank. You don't have to do anything to process the breeding in guppies. After reaching maturity, they will start breeding. Females can give birth to 10 to 50 fry at a time. This process continues after 25 to 35 days.

My experience

I had started my fish-keeping hobbies from the guppies. These fishes are easy to maintain and are usually kept in a plastic container. In my childhood days, we find these fishes in ponds or on roads during rainy seasons. Don't have colors or patterns like in aquarium shops. May these fishes thrive in wild conditions, because I use to have a cement tank full of guppies. No need for food or water change. They were happy in the tank.
